Job Description

AECOM Transit & Rail is seeking an experienced On-Call Senior Engineering Advisor, Transit and Rail to join our team in Western Canada. Featuring a flexible hybrid work arrangement and the support of Canada’s largest rail consulting team, you will play a critical role in delivering high-profile transit and rail projects. This position is ideal for a passionate rail professional with deep expertise in project management, design, construction, and maintenance of passenger and freight rail systems.

Job Duties May Include:

  • Provide high-level engineering, technical, and management guidance to multidisciplinary Transit & Rail project teams.
  • Advise on project delivery for LRT, higher speed rail, and freight corridor projects.
  • Review and provide input on all phases of project delivery, from design to construction and commissioning, resolving complex constructability and technical challenges.
  • Oversee all phases of project delivery, from design to construction and commissioning, resolving constructability and technical challenges related to slab track, special trackwork, and systems integration.
  • Liaise with multiple disciplines, departments, and external stakeholders.
  • Review industry guidance documents, technical reports, and business cases for rail infrastructure projects.
  • Support preparation of proposals, design packages, technical specifications, and tender documentation.
  • Participate in meetings with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies for project delivery and business development.
  • Mentor and supervise less experienced team members, and provide technical leadership.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of client, industry, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support business development and proposal efforts for transit and rail opportunities in Western Canada.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer registration in Canada.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in passenger and freight rail project management, design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated leadership on large-scale rail infrastructure projects in Canada and internationally.
  • Available to meet with clients in-person or on-site on a regular basis.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Ideally 15+ years of experience with freight rail, LRT, and civil linear infrastructure design.
  • 5+ years as a Project Manager on major rail projects.
  • Strong understanding of AREMA, APTA, and North American rail and transit standards.
  • Familiarity with CN, CPKC, BNSF, Shortlines, Translink, Calgary Transit, Edmonton Transit, or similar.
  • Experience as Owner’s Engineer or Lead Verifier on major rail programs.
  • Willingness for periodic site visits.
  • Bilingual (English primary, French secondary) is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English).
